The former Congress MP from Kadapa, Jaganmohan Reddy, has approached the Election Commission here with an application for the registration of a political party by name ‘YSR Party' to be launched by him.
YSR stands for his father and the former Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who died in a helicopter crash on September 2 in 2009, while serving his second term in office.
Along with the application, Mr. Jagan who had sent the papers through his representative Y.V. Subba Reddy, has given a sworn affidavit mentioning the purpose and objective of forming the party, its constitution, rules and guidelines and the list of 100 members of the new organisation (this is a statutory requirement).
Chief Election Commissioner S. Quraishi told The Hindu that the Commission would examine the application on merits and Commission guidelines and take further decision on providing registration.
EC sources said if all the papers are in order, then the Commission might invite the office-bearers of the party for a personal interview. It might be given preference in the free symbols during polls, but recognition would be given only after the party fulfils the minimum criteria for that. Thereafter, a separate symbol might be allotted to YSR Party.
