Pragyan Ojha

Picture of Pragyan Ojha

Profile

A successful product of the IPL, left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, with the endorsement of a 'purple cap', got a maiden ODI opportunity in the 2008 Asia Cup against Bangladesh. But not before he has already established himself in the Indian domestic circuit as a spinner to watch out for. In a spree of appearances, Ojha displayed reliable bowling acumen with economical spells and odd wickets. It was enough to win a call-up to India's 2009 World T20 campaign, which he commenced with a noteworthy 4/21 against Bangladesh.

Later in the year, he received a maiden Test call-up against Sri Lanka at Kanpur, a spot he retained for two Tests, largely owing to some tight, disciplined bowling. As with most young Indian bowlers, Ojha is largely used in an around the sub-continent and gains little international exposure as a result. He remains the only left-hander among other youngsters looking to partner Harbhajan Singh while filling in the void left by India's greatest spinner Anil Kumble.

Fast Facts

  • In 2006-2007 he ended the Ranji season with 29 wickets from just 6 matches at an average of 19.89.
  • His Test debut spell of 2/37 in 23 overs against Sri Lanka in 2009 is the 5th most economical spell for an Indian bowler (who has bowled more than 20 overs) on debut.
  • Ojha was Muralitharan's 800th and final Test scalp.
  • He is one of the few bowlers who has picked up four-wicket hauls in all three formats of the game
