Vinay Kumar

Profile

The irony of Vinay Kumar's career remains that despite being one of the best bowlers in domestic cricket for a good part of 5 years, it required the IPL to bring his enormous talent to higher recognition.

Since his debut for Karnataka in 2004-05, Kumar was a prolific wicket-taker with his first three seasons yielding 78 first-class wickets and a brilliant 2007-08 Ranji Trophy campaign convincing the Bangalore Royal Challengers to hand him an IPL contract. In the domestic circuit he continued to excel with 2009-10 being his best ever season with more than 50 wickets to his credit.

Despite these performances, the speedster continued to be ignored for the national team which compelled him to work on his batting to make it to the side as an all-rounder. It finally paid off in IPL 3 where his performances earned him a call for national duty and since then he has debuted in both T20s and ODIs.

A pacer who relies on his accuracy and ability to swing the ball, rather than on outright pace, Kumar is also a useful batsman lower down the order. However, he is still a fringe player and will need to come up with consistent performances to stake an indisputable claim in the Indian side.

Fast Facts

  • He was Bangalore's second highest wicket taker in the 2010 IPL with 16 wickets in 14 games.
  • He was the second highest wicket-taker with 40 scalps in the 2007-08 Ranji Trophy and was also adjudged as the 'Domestic Bowler of the Year'.
  • In his first 54 first-class games, he has astonishing figures having taken 5-wicket hauls 10 times and has bagged a 10-wicket haul twice.
  • In 2009-10, he picked up 53 first-class wickets at an average less than 20 and was the highest wicket-taker that domestic season (Ranji and Duleep Trophy combined).
