Ravichandran Ashwin

Picture of Ravichandran Ashwin

Profile

Ashwin followed the path of spin legend Anil Kumble in giving up a flourishing engineering career to pursue his cricketing passion. His early career has seen highs in glimpses but the true litmus test for sustenance is yet to be passed by this southern spinner.

He enjoyed a brilliant 2006-07 debut season with Tamil Nadu scalping 31 wickets at an average under 20 but unfortunately missed a major part of the following season with a wrist injury. However the off-spinner showed his mettle on comeback in 2008; first with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and then followed it up with stellar performances for Tamil Nadu with both bat and ball.

After having made it to the ODI team for the South Africa series in early 2010, Ashwin didn't play but with his exploits in IPL 3 was afforded another chance and he responded with a quick-fire 38 on his ODI debut against Sri Lanka. He also outshone Muralitharan in the 2010 T20 Champions League.

His attacking mentality even when being hit for runs is a refreshing attitude in age of T20. This along with his big-hitting lower down the order is also a handy asset. However, breaking into the side has proved tough and Ashwin's aim will now be to grab the opportunities - few though they may be- and use them to stamp his entry into the 'big league'.
