Ravindra Jadeja

Picture of Ravindra Jadeja

Profile

His performances in the 2008 Under-19 WC earned him rave reviews; with many convinced that he would be India's big future bet. Jadeja backed it up with steady performances both in IPL and domestic cricket and at 20 became one of the lucky few to have stepped into international cricket, barely out of his teens.

Glimpses of Jadeja's prodigious talent were evident in his very first first-class game when he scored 53 for West Zone. He was consequently a member of the 2006 Under-19 WC side which reached the finals and again partook in the 2008 edition in which his bowling performance of 2-25 against Pakistan in the tournament finals was crucial in India's victory. A good stint in the IPL with the Rajasthan Royals and an impressive all-round show in the 2008-09 season, prompted selectors to hand him an ODI debut against Sri Lanka and though India lost, the left-hander impressed with an unbeaten 60. Since then he has regularly featured in the side barring Tests and has remained steady with his performances.

As a batsman, Jadeja is an accumulator but it is his tight line and length as a spinner makes him an ideal fifth bowler in shorter formats. However, he may still be a few years away, if at all, from being a genuine all-rounder.
