Rohit Sharma

Profile

Rohit Sharma, along with teammate Robin Uthappa, were two youngsters who confidently came off the blocks to aid in India's success at the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007. A fifty in only his third ODI innings while chasing an elusive target against Pakistan later in the year, combined with sensational all-round displays in the IPL, convinced many to regard Sharma as the future of Indian cricket.

He kept his place in the ODI team since then, either as a lower or a higher middle-order batsman. Often, despite Sharma scoring decent knocks it eventually resulted in Indian defeats, a quality reminiscent of his contemporary Sachin Tendulkar.

He was in line to make his Test debut against South Africa in 2010 replacing an injured Laxman, but a last-minute injury to Sharma himself deferred a maiden Test cap.

Fast Facts

  • Only 3 of his 10 40+ knocks (100s: 2, 50s: 7, 40s: 3) in ODIs have resulted in Indian victories.
  • He was the fifth bowler to take an IPL hat-trick and was awarded the best U-23 player in the tournament's 2nd edition.
