Sachin Tendulkar

Picture of Sachin Tendulkar

Profile

Sachin Tendulkar can unquestionably be called the 'face of modern cricket'. He follows Don Bradman and Viv Richards as his generation's most successful batsman. The only close competitors Tendulkar faced were Brian Lara and, in more recent times, Ricky Ponting. Statistically, while Bradman scaled unreachable heights, Tendulkar, by his sheer consistency in longevity, marked his area with expansive width that shall, like the Australian great, probably never be conquered.

By the turn of the century, watching Tendulkar as India's lone warrior staging single-handed fights - while carrying the hopes of a billion hearts - was cricket's grandest spectacle. Too often his achievements would be let down by lack of support from teammates. Yet, his ability to continue to live to fight another day, shoulder blame unfairly and always delve into positives transcends Tendulkar beyond a cricketing icon to a role model and a prized treasure for the oft-tarnished image of the sport. By the end of it all, through each seemingly-effortless, technically-perfect shot that made batting an art form rather than a laborious effort, Tendulkar went on to be the game's leading run-getter, half-centurion and centurion in the two most pre-dominant forms of the game.

It is paradoxical that at the start of all these achievements was performance of nothingness - a debut ODI duck and an unflattering debut Test 15 against Pakistan as a 16-year-old. It underlines the old adage of attitude over talent, reminding everyone that even legends have to struggle to find their feet. He did make it big, of course, one small step at a time. First replacing Sanjay Manjrekar as India's most formidable batsman of the time and then becoming the only contender to Sunil Gavaskar's stature in Indian batting history. Finally, even the great Don Bradman drew parallels between himself and Tendulkar. In between, captaincy called on a few occasions, but it was one thing he wasn't cut out for. The "Little master" was also one of the very few who came out with his head held high as always, following the match-fixing scandal.

Following the turn of the century came India's ascendency after disappointing pasts during Tendulkar's foray in the peak of his career. He was now provided with the long-awaited support crew. But he still remained the mainstay while guiding his nation towards the summit of Test rankings. If Bradman started high and ended low, Tendulkar started low to rise unfathomably even miles before his end. A coveted World Cup remains a lone elusive unfulfilled dream and that would be a fitting crescendo for the most supreme batting marvel of his time.

Triumph for Tendulkar

In the tradition of the Opus Collection, this phenomenal tribute to Tendulkar will weigh in excess of 35kg and contain over 800 pages (each measuring an impressive half-a-metre square). The Tendulkar Opus will be available in a strictly limited edition and each copy will be hand-signed by the man himself.

There were unforgettable scenes last night as the Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar hosted a special event at the Opus Store, Covent Garden, to announce the first stage in an exciting new partnership with Kraken Opus: the forthcoming Tendulkar Opus and the launch of.

Surprise for the guests

And the ‘Little Master’ had a big surprise in store for the world’s journalists, photographers, TV crews and invited guests from around the world. There were gasps of amazement as he became the first sportsman ever to give a DNA sample in a live press conference!

A qualified nurse was on hand to take the mouthswab sample and Sachin smiled and joked throughout the surreal spectacle. Using rare DNA technology, the sample will be used to create a stunning two-metre wide multicoloured artwork in the Opus that will – quite literally – show the make-up of a sporting genius.

“We are always trying to give the insider angle on the subjects of our Opuses,” explained Tendulkar editor Justyn Barnes. “This time, with Sachin’s help, we’re just taking it to another level. We weren’t sure how Sachin would react to the idea, but he thought it was a fun concept and was really up for it. And the resulting artwork will be spectacular.”

The Tendulkar

During the event, Sachin also signed the first ten signature sheets for his limited edition Opus. Weighing in at over 30 kilos, 800 pages in length, with each page measuring half a metre square, the Tendulkar will contain exclusive photo shoots and special features with Sachin (and many other famous cricket personalities) among the 1,000 images and 150,000 words.

Previously unpublished family pictures, rare memorabilia and action shots chosen by Sachin himself and complemented by his own reminiscences will ensure this Opus is the definitive work on the record-breaking batsman.

It will also be one of the first Opus editions to incorporate state-of-the-art ‘augmented reality’ technology as part of its content.

Tendulkar declared himself honoured to be the only cricketer to be chosen as the subject of Opus, saying, “I can't think of a better way of displaying my life and career than in an Opus.”

A new website

Tendulkar’s legions of fans can follow the making of his Opus every step of the way at where they can access exclusive preview material, on-location footage, behind-the-scenes stories and pictures. Also featuring insider news on Sachin, exclusive interviews, candid photos and videos, kids’ section, interactive features, plus competitions to win signed memorabilia, tendulkaropus.com is set to become the first port of call for millions of Tendulkar admirers around the world.

will go live on June 18, 2009, but people can register now to be automatically entered into a prize draw to win an item personally signed by Sachin Tendulkar every day until the launch date. The sooner you register, the more chance you have to win.

The Little Master plays with Opus Reality

Following his June visit to the Opus Store in Covent Garden to announce the forthcoming Tendulkar Opus, cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar was back in London this month to film an exclusive interview for his official Opus website, tendulkaropus.com.

But before offering his thoughts on his life, career and love for cricket on film, the 'Little Master' took the opportunity to play around with Opus Reality™ (OR), amazing interactive software which will be incorporated in to future Opuses in the growing collection. Specially-commissioned by Opus Media Group, OR really has to be seen to be believed, but in simple terms it requires a ''trigger' (which can be a picture, a mobile phone... or anything) that sets off exclusive an amazing 3D visual experience when held in front of a PC screen or TV webcam.

As a demo, Sachin was given a special image of Michael Jackson (which will appear in The Michael Jackson Opus, currently in production) which triggered footage of the pop icon performing some of his famous dance moves. The cricketer was so wowed by the experience, he agreed to have this unique software incorporated into his own Opus.

The Tendulkar Opus has been officially announced at a launch event in London.
