Meet Joyal Rajan, a six year old child who weighs 60 kgs.He was quite normal like any other child of his age upto 3 yrs. After that he started to gain excessive weight at an alarming rate presently weighs 60 kgs. During the initial treatment and diagnosis at ICH and Kottayam Medical College, it was established that Joyal was suffering from Prader Willi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder (present from birth) that involves obesity, decreased muscle tone, decreased mental capacity, and sex glands that produce little or no hormones.
Joyal is suffering from rapid weight gain and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and is presently under treatment in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences – Department of Pediatrics and Deapartment of Endocrinology.
He is at present on continuous oxygen care and is having cor-pulmonale (chronic respiratory failure and right sided cardiac failure with pulmonary hypertension). He needs continuous medical care for supporting his life. As suggested by specialists, Joyal is being injected with 5 units of hormone on a daily basis which costs around Rs. 1,500/- per day. If his respiratory symptoms settle down with current therapy and his weight reduced with treatment, he can be tried on Growth Hormore Therapy which will cost Rs. 3-4 lakh per year.
