Equipped with the near-impossible task of replacing India's leading wicket-taker - Anil Kumble - Amit Mishra made a notable start to his Test career. Deputizing for the then-injured Kumble against a visiting Australia in 2008, his figures of 5-71 led India to one of the two Test wins to lift the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
Prior to his Test call up, it had been 5 years when Delhi-born Mishra sweated it out in Indian colours, debuting in 2003 against South Africa in Dhaka. Later, recognition arrived after impressive displays in the IPL for his home city. A well-disguised googly and precision leg-break are Mishra's honed stock deliveries.
Following Kumble's retirement from Test during Australia series, Mishra became the first-choice to partner Harbhajan whenever selectors opted for a two-pronged spin attack. Like his off-break partner, Mishra too is a handy tail-ender with the technical nuance to become a good bowling all-rounder. It all adds up to the Delhite looking to carve his own niche rather than wilting under the pressure of filling in Kumble's impossible boots.
