Prevention of Back Pain

A variety of exercises can be performed in an attempt to prevent back injuries, but being active is key to disc health. Exercise is the best method of reducing the negative effects of stress, in addition to improving general health.

Exercises such as walking, swimming and bicycling are good to put off your back pain. Controlling your weight is another important step towards the relieving backache as excess weight greatly increases the stress on soft back tissues.

You should sleep on a firm mattress with knees bent at right angles to the torso. Never ever bend your waist down to lift any object, instead squat close to the object then bend your knees with keeping the back straight.

Neck tension arises from long hours working at the desk or behind the wheel of the car, which can be relieved by certain neck exercises. These include rotating the head clockwise and anti-clockwise allowing the head to drop forward and backward as far as possible. Hot fomentations, sponging or application of radiant heat to the back will be suitable for immediate relief. Yogic asana which are beneficial in the treatment of backache are bhuj-angasana, shalabhasana, halasana, uttanpadasana and Shavasana.
