Indian wrestlers fail doping tests

Four Indian wrestlers from the Commonwealth Games team face suspension after failing dope tests barely a month before the beginning of the event.

Sumit, Masuam Khatri, Rajiv Tomar and Gursharanpreet Kaur have tested positive for methylhexaneamine, also used as a nasal decongestant.

Tomar recently received the Arjuna Award, India’s highest sporting honour.

They have been provisionally suspended and a hearing will be conducted into the findings, authorities say.

Reports say that wrestling authorities have already named four replacements for the Commonwealth wrestling team.

India has named 21 wrestlers and 90 athletes – its biggest ever contingent – for next month’s Commonwealth Games, reports say.

Correspondents say that doping has been a problem with Indian athletes with a number of weight lifters testing positive for banned substances in the past.
